Content Creation

Plan the cutdowns before the shoot, not after

Most brands leave a production day with one polished film and no social content. The fix is a shot list built backwards from every deliverable the next quarter needs.

The expensive mistake

A client books a production day. The crew shoots a beautiful two-minute brand film in 16:9. Six weeks later the social team needs vertical content, and there is nothing usable — the framing is wrong, the pacing is wrong, and every shot assumes sound is on.

So another shoot gets booked. The second shoot costs roughly what the first one did, and produces content that does not quite match, because the light was different and so was the wardrobe.

Work backwards from the deliverable list

Before anyone books a camera, write down every asset the next quarter needs. A realistic list for a mid-sized brand looks like: one hero film, three 30-second cutdowns, eight to twelve vertical edits, twenty to thirty stills, and a b-roll library the social team can cut from independently.

Now build the shot list against that. Composition leaves headroom for vertical crops. Key moments get shot twice, once wide and once tight. Presenters deliver each line in a long and a short version. Everything that will run silent is shot to work without dialogue.

Three rules that do most of the work

Shoot for the frame, not the crop

Cropping a 16:9 shot to 9:16 throws away most of the frame and usually the composition with it. Where vertical matters, shoot vertical — either with a second camera or a second pass.

Assume the sound is off

The majority of short-form video is watched silently. Anything essential has to be visible: on-screen text, captions burned in or auto-generated, and visual demonstration rather than verbal explanation.

Earn the first second

A vertical edit does not have a build. The first frame either stops the scroll or it does not. Plan two or three alternative openings for each edit and let performance decide which one runs.

What this changes about the budget

Planning this way adds perhaps 15% to pre-production and a few hours on the day. It replaces an entire second shoot. It also means the social calendar has real material in it for months rather than weeks, which is generally where the compounding value sits.

Next step

Turn the theory into a plan.

If any of this applies to your brand, the next step is a conversation rather than another article.
